West Region Tournament Helps Support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
The 2017 tournament raised $3,600 from 75 participants while this year’s event raised $7,930 from 137 participants and donors in the Green Valley area. About $5,300 was raised from voluntary registration donations, $1,200 from a silent auction, and $750 from raffle ticket sales for items donated by local merchants. Other cash donations from supporters of St. Jude totaled nearly $1,000.
To help maximize the donation to St Jude, expenses were kept to a minimum, just $330 with $180 of that used for medals.
The Quail Creek Classic tournament co-directors were Quail Creek residents Erika Lochow and USAPA Ambassador Lenny Friedman. The format was a round robin to 15 points with a medal round to determine gold and silver recipients. In the two-day tournament, participants competed in 2.5, 3.0. 3.5, and 4.0 divisions in women’s, men’s and mixed doubles. Matches had referees and the medal rounds had lines people.
Participants enjoyed the tournament and are looking forward to competing in next year’s Quail Creek Classic, scheduled for March 22-24, 2019 at the Quail Creek Country Club. Mark it on your calendars! A 4.5/5.0 division will be added to showcase the finest pickleball players in Southern Arizona. They will compete the evening of March 22, 2019.
