The mission of USA Pickleball is to promote the development and growth of pickleball in the United States and its territories.

About USA Pickleball

USA Pickleball is the official National Governing Body (NGB) for the sport of pickleball in the United States. As a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, USA Pickleball is dedicated to preserving the integrity of the game while advancing its growth and development nationwide.

The organization supports players, clubs, and communities by sanctioning premier tournaments, offering certified equipment testing, training referees, certifying facilities, and providing a wide range of educational resources. USA Pickleball also maintains and updates the official rules of the sport, ensuring consistency and fairness at every level of play.

Led by a Board of Directors and a dedicated national office staff, USA Pickleball delivers the infrastructure and strategic vision necessary to fuel the continued expansion of pickleball across the country—benefiting members with exclusive access to events, programs, and tools that elevate their experience on and off the court.

Mike Nealy

Chief Executive Officer

Read Mike's Bio

Mike Nealy was named Chief Executive Officer of USA Pickleball in May of 2023. Prior to joining USA Pickleball, Mike served for eight years as the Executive Director of the Arizona Sports Foundation, which operates the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl. He is widely credited with restoring the Fiesta Bowl’s status as one of the premier bowl games in the U.S. Prior to college football, Mike spent a total of 12 years in the National Hockey League, most recently serving as President, Chief Operating Officer and Alternate Governor of the National Hockey League’s Phoenix Coyotes (now the Arizona Coyotes). In addition to restoring the stability of the franchise and elevating its standing in the league and Phoenix community, Mike also achieved record-breaking sales, operating successes, and national recognition. Prior to joining the Coyotes in 2006, he spent four seasons with the NHL’s Minnesota Wild, where his responsibilities included strategic planning and finance. Mike is a graduate of the University of Minnesota, earning a master’s degree in business administration and a bachelor’s degree in business.

Justin Maloof

Chief Competition Officer

Justin Maloof was named Executive Director for USA Pickleball on January 1, 2013 and was the organization’s first full-time employee. He was elevated to Chief Operating Officer in 2021 and then Chief Competition Officer in 2024. As USA Pickleball’s COO, he is responsible for the overall operation of the organization. He also oversees USA Pickleball’s operational structure, sustainability and service to its members and sponsors. Maloof is entering his 10th year with USA Pickleball and his 30th year in professional/amateur sports. Prior to joining USAP, he served 16 years with the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes Hockey Club. He served 2 years as the team’s head fan development before being named Executive Director of the team’s training center in Scottsdale.

Jose Moreno

Chief Marketing & Strategy Officer

Jose Moreno is a sports business executive bringing over 15 years of experience in the sports industry to the USA Pickleball team. Most recently, he served as Chief Marketing Officer for the Fiesta Bowl for the last 8 years where he led the strategic planning and execution of the organization's marketing, branding, corporate partnerships, community relations/charitable giving, communications, social/digital media, and creative departments. Prior to his tenure at Fiesta Bowl, Moreno built and led the community relations initiatives for Grand Canyon University and the Phoenix Suns. Jose received his BS in Marketing from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, later obtaining a Master’s Degree in Leadership from Grand Canyon University.

Carl Schmits

Chief Technical Officer

Read Carl's Bio

Carl Schmits serves as Chief Technical Officer. He also serves as the chair of the Equipment and Evaluation Committee (EEC). In this role, Carl and his team are responsible for the definition, design, and implementation of specifications, standards and testing protocols. Carl is also USAP's primary liaison with the manufacturers and independent certification lab on all testing matters. He also oversees and manages USAP's equipment compliance department. Carl’s training was in industrial and systems engineering with Battelle Memorial Institute, with careers in professional racquet sports (including field product development), and executive-level roles within information and communications technology, medical device development, robotics and renewable energy.

Chris Zukas

Vice President of Membership Development & Service

Chris Zukas was named Vice President of Membership Development & Service for USA Pickleball in June 2024. With a decade of experience in the Olympic sports movement, Chris has spearheaded membership growth and engagement, orchestrated national and international events, and crafted impactful marketing and communications strategies at USA Diving and USA Water Ski & Wake Sports. His dedication to community engagement extended to his role at the American Cancer Society, where he led the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk of Indianapolis, managed donor engagement and stewardship, and excelled in sponsorship solicitation and stewardship. Chris received his undergraduate degree in Marketing from Niagara University.

Steve Wong

Vice President of Competition

Steve Wong was named Vice President of Competition of USA Pickleball in January 2024. Steve is no stranger to USAP as he served as the organization’s first webmaster and board vice chair back in 2005. Steve is a highly accomplished pickleball player and coach and was inducted into the Pickleball Hall of Fame in 2021. During his previous experience at USAP, he was also the Co-Tournament Director for the 2012 USA Pickleball National Championships. As part of his illustrious competitive career, Steve has competed and medaled in hundreds of pickleball tournaments around the country and is a six-time USA Pickleball National Champion. Prior to his new role at USAP, Steve was involved in almost every facet of the sport including equipment manufacturing and teaching the sport to players around the world. Steve first started playing pickleball in 1991 in Bellevue, Washington, boasting over 30 years of playing experience.

Luke Underwood

Vice President of National Events

Luke Underwood was named Vice President of National Events in May of 2024. He hopes to bring excellence and creativity to the national tournament event scene. He brings vast experience in sports and entertainment events, including working for Major League Rugby, FIFA World Cup, ESPN, Live Nation, multiple major touring musicians, and freelance events in nearly every sports league. With additional experience in broadcasting, hospitality, teaching, and construction management, he is dedicated to building world class event experiences and helping to continue to grow the sport of pickleball. Luke is a native Arizonan, an NAU Lumberjack, and excited to be in the Valley of the Sun. He’s an avid pickleball player that hopes to get better.

Rose James

Vice President and Controller

Rose James serves as a Vice President and Controller for USA Pickleball and, with Dan Ellsworth, CFO, is responsible for custody and management of the corporate funds, managing accounts payable and receivables, budget maintenance, federal/state tax filings, and accounting-specific platforms. Rose is an active CPA and brings over 20 of accounting experience in industry and public accounting. Rose spent the last six years serving as the controller for the Fiesta Bowl.

Riley Burgess

Vice President of Equipment Compliance

Riley Burgess was named Vice President of Equipment Compliance for USA Pickleball in June 2025. He brings over a decade of experience in the sporting goods industry, having held multiple roles at Dick’s Sporting Goods spanning product development, sourcing, manufacturing, and brand management. His deep involvement across the entire product lifecycle from initial concept and factory production to retail execution, has provided him with unique insight into the pickleball industry. This comprehensive background positions him well to lead USA Pickleball’s equipment compliance efforts, with a focus on maintaining the sport’s integrity and supporting its continued growth./

Lance Cowart

Managing Director of Field Operations

Lance Cowart joined USA Pickleball in August 2022 as the Managing Director of Field Operations. In this newly created role, Lance helps build and support a national volunteer field comprising Sector Leaders, Regional Directors and USA Pickleball Ambassadors. Prior to joining USA Pickleball, Lance spent 28 years in executive leadership and sales, primarily in the medical device industry, where he led numerous teams to best-in-class results. Lance, who is a competitive pickleball player, earned All-America honors while playing tennis at Abilene Christian University in Texas. After graduating, he continued his tennis career while playing professionally both nationally and internationally.

Julie Atherton

Managing Director of Human Resources

Julie Atherton serves as the Managing Director of Human Resources for USA Pickleball. Julie has 25 years of expertise in the sports industry, most recently serving as the Senior Director of Administration for the Fiesta Bowl, overseeing the human resources and administration functions of the 30-plus staff, managing benefits, payroll, seasonal associate program and diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Julie joined the Fiesta Bowl after working as Director of Human Resources at OB Sports Golf Management for six years and Vice President of Human Resources at the Arizona Coyotes for 11 years. A graduate of Eastern Illinois University, Julie began her professional career working in the HR function of the Chicago White Sox for seven years. She is accredited as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM).

Gail Avisar

Managing Director of Legal Compliance & Office Administration

Gail Avisar is a legal professional with over 27 years of experience in various legal settings including Sr. Paralegal in a boutique law firm specializing in corporate law, Sr. Compliance Officer for a gaming company, Director of Legal Compliance for the Phoenix Coyotes and 9+ years with the Fiesta Bowl, most recently as the Sr. Director of Legal Compliance. In Gail’s role as Managing Director of Legal Compliance and Office Administration with USA Pickleball, she will oversee the day-to-day legal and office operations of the organization. Gail attended Queens College in New York having majored in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing and went on to pursue a career in Paralegal Studies.

Tom Tadler

Managing Director of Officiating

Tom Tadler is currently the Managing Director of Officiating and the Chairman of the Referee Advisory Council for USA Pickleball. He is a Registered Referee Trainer and a member of the Advanced Training Session Team in the Atlantic South Region led by Julie Scott. Tom has over 1,500 refereed matches since joining USA Pickleball. He joined the USAP referee program in 2018 and became a Certified Referee in September of 2019. He has been the lead official on many televised and live streamed broadcasts including for USA Pickleball, the Minto US Open, Association of Pickleball Players (APP) and Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) matches. Tom has worked for Axalta Coatings for many years managing multimillion-dollar global customers located in 10 countries. He has negotiated contracts and managed support teams that service the customer to reach production and quality goals. Tom holds a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Illinois State University.

Christian Portaro

Senior Director of Partnerships

Christian Portaro assumes the role of Senior Director of Partnerships for USA Pickleball. His responsibilities encompass spearheading the growth and service strategy for the organization’s sales and activation department. This includes driving sales growth and retention, elevating the level of service provided to all partners, and developing national activation campaigns for brands.

Christian brings over a decade of experience in the sports and entertainment industry, specializing in integrated partnerships across various domains such as hospitality, events, media, signage, digital platforms, in-game activations, and national programming. Prior to his appointment at USA Pickleball, he served as the Director of Partnership Marketing for two seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers and spent six seasons as the Corporate Partnerships Director at the Fiesta Bowl.

His academic background includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Marketing earned from Arizona State University. Christian looks forward to bringing significant contributions to USA Pickleball’s partnership initiatives and overall strategic growth.

Craig Haas

Director of Tournament Operations

Craig Haas serves as the Director of Tournament Operations for USA Pickleball. He began helping organize and operate local tournaments in 2016, and began working as an Independent Contractor with PickleballTournaments.com in 2019, where he began running tournament operations for larger events. Craig served on the Board of Tustin Pickleball as the Director of Instruction and Competition in 2019 and 2020. He also was involved in running USA Pickleball's National Championships in 2021 and 2022. In 2023, he helped run events such as the USA Pickleball Mountain and West Diamond Regional tournaments, The Huntsman World Senior Games, and USA Pickleball's Diamond Amateur Championships. Starting in 1993, Craig spent 29 years working for the United States Postal Service as a City Letter Carrier in California and North Carolina. He worked for the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) union for four years while in North Carolina as a Shop Steward and Branch Scribe for the Local 545.

Jennifer Rogers

Director of Communications & PR

Jennifer Rogers is the Director of Communications and PR at USA Pickleball, where she leads the organization’s national communications strategy, public relations efforts, media engagement, storytelling, and more.

Jennifer brings over a decade of sports and entertainment experience. She held several roles with Ilitch Sports + Entertainment, where she most recently served as Marketing Communications Manager. There, she contributed to all internal and external communication plans, developed brand and content strategies, and oversaw the launch and evolution of corporate campaigns, newsletters, and social media platforms.

Her earlier career includes extensive media relations and communications roles with Major League Baseball organizations, including the Detroit Tigers, Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins, Miami Marlins, and Kansas City Royals.

Andrea Fogarty

Director of Marketing

In her role, she leads national brand marketing initiatives, overseeing integrated campaigns to enhance brand awareness, drive engagement, and support the sport's rapid growth. She manages USA Pickleball’s digital strategy, creative direction, and brand positioning, ensuring a cohesive presence across all marketing channels.

Prior to joining USA Pickleball, Andrea worked at The James Agency as the Director of Client Services, where she played a key role in developing integrated marketing strategies for a diverse range of clients. She also served as the Director of Marketing at Epic Productions, where she focused on driving business growth through digital marketing, branding, and content strategy.

With extensive experience in brand development, strategic planning, and digital marketing, Andrea is passionate about expanding the reach and impact of USA Pickleball while fostering its community and membership engagement.

Ashley VanOchten

Director of Corporate Partnerships and Strategic Projects

Ashley VanOchten serves as the Director of Corporate Partnerships and Strategic Projects for USA Pickleball. In her role, she is responsible for generating new business revenue with local, regional, and national companies through the sale of integrated packaging of USA Pickleball assets. She is also responsible for supporting the Chief Strategy Officer with strategic projects throughout the year that aims to grow the USAP brand and support the rapid growth of the sport. Prior to USA Pickleball, Ashley was the Manager of Sales and Activation for the Fiesta Bowl, Manager of Corporate Activation for the Arizona Coyotes and also worked on the Corporate team for the G League of the Golden State Warriors and minor league baseball. Ashley holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications with a minor in Broadcasting and Journalism from Central Michigan University. She also serves on the Young Professionals Committee for Special Olympics of Arizona and is heavily involved with the Miracle League of Arizona.

Nick Salute

Nick Salute serves as the Director of Partnership Activation for USA Pickleball. In his role, he is responsible for developing and executing strategies to maximize the value of corporate partnerships through fostering relationships and ensuring the delivery of assets. He is also tasked with managing key processes and procedures for the activation team. Before his time at USA Pickleball, Nick spent four seasons with the Arizona Coyotes on both the corporate sales and activation teams and worked with the Minnesota Vikings and Phoenix Rising FC. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a master’s degree in Sports Law and Business from Arizona State University.

Brenda Puga

Director of Community Relations

Brenda Puga serves as the Director of Community Relations for USA Pickleball. In her role, she will lead community outreach initiatives and programs that contribute to the awareness of USA Pickleball on a national level. Brenda is responsible for charitable giving efforts, community events and building and maintaining relationships with national nonprofits. She joins the team with more than 10 years’ experience in community outreach including nonprofit partnerships, event management, programming and charitable giving. Prior to USA Pickleball, Brenda held community relations roles at Mattress Firm, Special Olympics Arizona and most recently, Fiesta Bowl. Brenda holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism with a minor in Film & Television from the University of Arizona (Bear Down).

Hana Papaco

Director of Recreational and Collegiate Engagement

Hana Papaco serves as the Director of Recreational and Collegiate Engagement for USA Pickleball and Co-Chair of the Grants Committee. In her role, she is responsible for promoting USA Pickleball’s recreational resources and assisting youth organizations, colleges/universities, parks and recreation departments, HOAs and other pickleball facilities and groups as they create more programs across the country. She also helps oversee the grant process, specifically the Youth and Collegiate Grant. Prior to USA Pickleball, Hana has gained over seven years of demonstrated work experience in recreational, collegiate and professional sports. Hana holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from Ottawa University - Arizona, where she also played and was captain of the women’s tennis team.

Drew Thomas

Director of Tournament and Member Experience

Drew Thomas joins USA Pickleball as the Director of Tournament and Member Experience, a role designed to enhance the organization's offerings. With a focus on expanding sanctioned tournaments and certified leagues, Drew will work across the Membership Department to elevate the pickleball experience for all members. His background in sales and customer success, primarily in technology and consulting, brings a fresh perspective to the team. As a PPR certified pickleball coach, Drew combines his professional expertise with his passion for the sport. Collaborating closely with Member Services, Recreational, and Ambassador Engagement teams, he aims to improve overall member satisfaction and drive growth in USA Pickleball's programs and services. Jon Lampe

Jon Lampe serves as the Director of Education at USA Pickleball, bringing over a decade of experience in curriculum development, instructional design, and editorial leadership. With a strong background in education and content strategy, Jon plays a key role in expanding learning initiatives, developing coaching resources, and ensuring that players of all levels have access to high-quality education materials tailored for growth in the sport.

Before joining USA Pickleball, Jon held leadership roles in educational programming, content development, and publishing. Jon has taught composition and creative writing at the university level and has contributed research and curriculum design in academic and corporate sectors. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in Fiction from the University of Miami and a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Missouri–St. Louis.

Devyn McCurdy

Director of Event Operations

Devyn McCurdy serves as the Director of Event Operations for USA Pickleball. In her role, she oversees the planning and execution of premier pickleball tournaments nationwide, managing all operational logistics to ensure each event aligns with the organization’s brand, mission, and growing community.

Devyn brings a background in high-profile global sporting events and collegiate athletics, including work with the 2022 World Athletics Championships and the University of Oregon’s football and baseball programs. Prior to joining USA Pickleball, she served as Director of Events for an Arizona-based entertainment company, where she led large-scale productions ranging from festivals and concerts to corporate activations and branded experiences.

A proud University of Oregon graduate, her strengths are in logistics, event strategy, cross-departmental collaboration, and bringing complex ideas to life. She is passionate about creating seamless, innovative, and impactful experiences for athletes, fans, and partners alike at USA Pickleball.

Peter Borg

Senior Accountant

Peter Borg serves as Senior Accountant for USA Pickleball. In his role, Peter helps maintain almost all aspects of accounting at USAPB such as but not limited to accounts payable and receivables, bank reconciliations, & balance sheet entries. He servers under the Controller and provides direct support. In his previous role, he spent two years as a Staff Accountant for a worldwide property management company. Peter obtained his Series 6 Securities License and has over 12 years of accounting experience and earned a bachelor’s degree of Finance from Northern Arizona University.

Louis Thiel

Manager of Membership

Louis Thiel serves as the Membership Manager for USA Pickleball. He works hard to ensure that all of our members have the best experience possible. He fosters existing relationships and builds new ones, safeguarding membership satisfaction while monitoring membership statistics to encourage community growth. Prior to USA Pickleball, Louie focused on membership and customer experience as an Account Executive at Phoenix Raceway. He then translated his skills towards sales as a store manager for Sherwin-Williams. In college, Louie also held a position with the Milwaukee Brewers Spring Training as a clubhouse manager and continued to graduate with a Bachelor's degree in Sports Management from Grand Canyon University's Jerry Colangelo College of Business.

Andrea Moultrie

Volunteer and Events Manager

Andrea Moultrie serves as the Volunteer and Events Manager for USA Pickleball. In her role, she oversees volunteer recruitment, training, and management for USA Pickleball events, ensuring seamless support for tournaments and initiatives nationwide. She also coordinates catering and housing logistics for staff, athletes, referees, and partners for USA Pickleball events. Andrea was promoted in December 2024 after serving as the Volunteer and Events Coordinator. In her previous role, she played a key part in enhancing volunteer engagement and event execution for USA Pickleball’s growing tournament schedule. Prior to joining USA Pickleball, Andrea built extensive experience in event operations and volunteer management, supporting various sporting events, including Super Bowls, college bowls and playoffs, and other sports-related roles. Her background in hospitality has equipped her with the skills to deliver top-tier event experiences. Andrea holds a master’s degree in Sport Management and a bachelor’s degree in Marketing from Jacksonville State University.

AJ Peterson

Partnership Activation Coordinator

AJ Peterson serves as the Partnership Activation Coordinator for USA Pickleball. In his role, he is responsible for the execution of partnership marketing objectives and reporting of key insights and timely updates to each partner. Prior to his time at USA Pickleball, AJ spent time with the Arizona Diamondbacks on the corporate partnership activation team where he helped to ensure the maximization of partnership value. Additionally, AJ spent time with the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury on their brand communications team. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Sports Journalism and a master’s degree in Sports Law and Business, both of which were obtained at Arizona State University.

Nick Gulotta

Event Logistics Coordinator

Nick Gulotta serves as the Event Logistics Coordinator. He is responsible for event load in and load out, our warehouse, optimizing the truck process and merchandise ordering. Prior to joining USA Pickleball, Nick spent time with Intersport and the APP Tour on their property activations, as well as live event broadcasts and working operations at TPC Scottsdale, which included the WM Phoenix Open. Nick is from Chicago and a graduate of Grand Canyon University with a bachelor's degree in sports management.

Sydney Kim

Social Media & Communications Coordinator

Sydney Kim serves as the Social Media & Communications Coordinator for USA Pickleball. In her role she oversees social media content strategy and organization across USA Pickleball social media channels. She also supports Communication and Marketing brand efforts and opportunities for the USA Pickleball brand. Prior to USA Pickleball, Sydney spent time with the Arizona Diamondbacks on the social media team and Jeramie McPeek Communications working across all platforms and channels. Sydney holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sports Business, Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management with a minor in Communications from Arizona State University, where she also ran track on the Women’s Track and Field team.

Steve Stone

Ambassador Engagement Manager - North

Steve Stone is USA Pickleball's Ambassador Engagement Manager - North. Steve holds both a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice, attained while minoring in Mathematics and Psychology, from Drake University in Des Moines, IA. An Army Veteran, Airborne Ranger, Steve has received a variety of awards, accolades, and achievements, in the military as well as throughout his business and personal life. Steve cites those most valuable and rewarding as those which helped, educated, or enriched others. In his spare time, Steve enjoys music, singing & entertaining, graphic design, travel, racket-sports (including pickleball), and site-seeing.

Eddie McDonald

Ambassador Engagement Manager - South

Eddie McDonald serves as the Ambassador Engagement Manager for the South which comprises the Atlantic South, Mid-South, and Southwest Regions. Eddie completed a 30-year career as a Georgia High School Teacher, Coach, and Principal in 2014. Eddie and his wife Joan moved to Kalispell, Montana in 2015 where they took up the sport of Pickleball. Shortly afterward he became an ambassador and helped organize play there. They took their passion of the sport to Gulf Shores, Alabama in 2017 where he continued as Ambassador as well as President of the local pickleball club. Eddie has been involved in the running of several successful tournaments around the Alabama Gulf Coast, including two Atlantic South Regionals. He is a very competitive player as well as an IPTPA level 2 instructor.

Heather Conger

Ambassador Engagement Manager - East

Heather Conger joined USA Pickleball in November 2022 as the Ambassador Engagement Manager - East. Heather helps support a national volunteer field of Regional Directors and USA Pickleball Ambassadors. Prior to joining USA Pickleball, Heather spent 23 years in collegiate athletics, 18 of those as a Director of Athletics within the National Junior College Athletic Association. During that time, she also served as the NJCAA Region 19 Assistant Women's Director which allowed her the opportunity to chair the NJCAA Division II and III Women's Soccer Committees. She also was selected to co-chair the NJCAA Student-Athlete Council designed to provide student-athletes with tools for involvement at both the regional and national levels of the association. She graduated from The College of New Jersey with her Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees, with a concentration in Athletic Administration. During her time at TCNJ she was a two time captain of the Lions, earning a Women’s Soccer National Championship in 1994.

Ben Frie

Ambassador Engagement Manager - West

Ben Frie serves as the Ambassador Engagement Manager - West after spending five years in the role as Ambassador, District Ambassador and Southwest Region Ambassador of Engagement for USA Pickleball. After spending 22 years working as a senior manager in the role of Sales Management and later Region Finance Manager for a fortune 500 company, Ben left the corporate world to become CEO of a start-up business. Ben’s business success achievements honors in the business world include Multi President Club awards and selected by Office Elite as one of the fastest growing small companies in America growing from 5 employees to 56 employees in six years. Ben’s passion for sports includes coaching AAU basketball for 12 years with his teams finishing in the High School bracket of top 10 results in the nation. Ben’s introduction to pickleball started in 2018 in Kansas City. Ben and his wife Donna fell in love with the game and the pickleball community. Ben has used his past business leadership and coaching skills to teach the game of pickleball to several hundred players and groups like Special Olympics, Arizona PE Teachers and youth/senior clinics. Ben has competed and medaled in several tournaments being an avid player.
