A numerical look at pickleball’s largest-ever tournament

The 2023 Biofreeze USA Pickleball National Championships officially begins on Sunday, November 5 at Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, TX, an inner-ring suburb of Dallas.

The event marks pickleball’s largest-ever tournament with over 3,500 competitors hitting the courts in front of an estimated 20,000 attendees over the course of the week-long celebration of America’s fastest-growing sport.

World No. 1s Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters headline a star-studded pro player field, which also features men’s players Federico Staksrud, Tyson McGuffin, Jay Devilliers, Collin Johns, Julian Arnold, Dylan Frazier, and JW Johnson, and women’s players Catherine Parenteau, Anna Bright, Hurricane Tyra Black, Irina Tereschenko, Lauren Stratman, Callie Jo Smith and Jorja Johnson, and many more.

Here’s a quick look at Nationals in numbers:

3500+ – Number of players competing at Nationals, which consists of 56.47% male competitors and 43.53% female competitors.

49 – Number of U.S. states represented by players competing at Nationals, plus the District of Columbia. The lone state without representation at the event is North Dakota.

632 – Numbers of players competing at Nationals hailing from California, the most from any U.S. state. Texas ranks second with 591 players, while Washington – the birthplace of pickleball – ranks third with 241 players.

93 – Age of the oldest female player at Nationals, who is also the oldest player in the entire field. She will be competing in mixed doubles.

86 – Age of the oldest male player at Nationals. He will be competing in men’s doubles and mixed doubles.

7 – Age of the youngest competitor, male or female, at Nationals. The son of pickleball pros Ryan DeHeart and Megan Fudge DeHeart, JR DeHeart will be playing junior boys singles.

6 – Number of celebrities participating in the Deep Eddy Vodka Celebrity Pickleball Showdown on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 7pm CT on Championship Court, including Dirk Nowitzki, Tony Romo, Jason Kidd, Scottie Scheffler, Tyler Seguin and John Isner.
