Spin Rate Test Development

The USA Pickleball Spin Rate Test was developed in collaboration with Image Systems, an industry leader in high-speed motion and video analysis technology.

Key features of the testing system include:

• A dual-camera system, which improves measurement accuracy and repeatability compared to single-camera methods.
• Proprietary software that automatically calculates spin rate (RPM), eliminating the need for manual frame counting.
• An objective, repeatable testing process that minimizes operator variability and increases consistency across all evaluations.

Certification Guidance

All certified paddles must comply with the equipment standards that were in effect at the time of certification.

Beginning October 1, 2026, all paddles submitted for certification must achieve a measured spin rate of 2,100 RPM or less to receive USA Pickleball approval.

The official Spin Rate Test Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will be distributed on July 15, 2026.

Effective immediately, manufacturers may voluntarily submit paddles for evaluation using the Spin Rate Test. These submissions will undergo the complete certification process, including the Spin Rate Test. Paddles that successfully meet the new standard will not appear on the USA Pickleball Approved Paddle List before October 1, 2026.

Until October 1, 2026, paddles that successfully meet the current Surface Roughness and Coefficient of Friction requirements may continue to be certified and added to the Approved Paddle List under the existing equipment standards.

Testing Equipment Availability

In response to manufacturer feedback, the Image Systems camera and software platform used to conduct the Spin Rate Test will be commercially available. Additionally, the instrumented test ball developed specifically for this system in partnership with Franklin will also be available for purchase.

Ongoing Evaluation

USA Pickleball will continue to monitor the implementation and impact of these changes over the next 12 months.
