Many of pickleball’s brightest stars began their athletic careers on the tennis court and Cammy MacGregor is no exception.  Once ranked as high as 75^th in the world in singles, Cammy also excelled in doubles establishing a ranking of 38th in the world in 1992. Teaming up with her sister Cynthia, the duo reached the quarterfinals at the 1991 Australian Open.

Four years earlier at the ’91 Aussie Open, Cammy earned a spot in the fourth round in singles where she eventually lost to Zina Garrison, at the time, one of the world’s top ranked players. Cammy won three doubles titles, including the WTA’s Taipei Women’s Championships in 1987 teaming up with big sis Cynthia.  “Being a tennis player has its advantages in pickleball for sure. The technique and strategy are very similar, court awareness, keeping your eye on the ball, shot placement, shot selection and picking the right time to pull the trigger.”

Currently, Cammy is a tennis and pickleball instructor at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad. She continues to excel on the pickleball court, earning big wins in 2018 and has continued her winning ways so far this year.

At the 2018 Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championships she won Gold in Senior Women’s Pro Singles, a Gold Medal in Senior Women’s Pro Doubles, Silver Medal in Senior Mixed Doubles Pro to go along with a Bronze Medal in Women’s Doubles 50+ 5.0. At the 2019 US Open, Cammy captured Gold in Senior Women’s Pro Doubles, Women’s 50+ 5.0 Doubles and Mixed 50+ 5.0 Mixed Doubles and silver medals in Senior Women Pro Singles and Senior Mixed Doubles Pro.

“We are all so fortunate getting to play pickleball at the IWTG, where it hosts the 4th largest tennis tournament in the world. Indian Wells is not only a beautiful city, it’s a spectacular setting for Pickleball Nationals. They did a fantastic job the first year, and I know this year will only be better. Also, I lived 20 years in La Quinta, so it’s great to be able to visit with friends and have them come watch great pickleball.”

Cammy’s view on the future of the sport of pickleball remains steadfast and clear. “Pickleball is going to continue its growth as it has the past several years. More and more tennis facilities are adding pickleball courts and cities are adding courts for public access across the country.”
