2015 Tournament of Champions Awards $37,000 in Prize Money
The best pickleball players in the world gathered in Brigham City, Utah Sept. 9 to 12, to compete for a share of the prize money – the highest among USAPA sanctioned tournaments – and enjoy evening entertainment and the final night awards banquet. The competition was divided into Masters (19 to 49) and Legends (50+), each with its own purse. The younger group accounted for about 60 percent of the 105 players. International participants included two each from Canada and Spain.
Several newcomers to major tournament pickleball were among the medal winners and it was widely agreed that the overall competition raised pickleball to a whole new level of proficiency. One accomplishment of special note was the Grand Slam by Scott Moore of Colorado Springs, winning all three Legends events (his son Daniel won two of the three Masters events). Run by the American Dream Foundation and supported by Brigham City and the local pickleball club, the four-day tournament has grown each year since its inception in 2013.
New this year was the presentation of the Lanius trophy in honor of Bob and Jettye Lanius, creators of the PickleballTournaments.com tournament management software system. The traveling trophy will spend a week with each of this year’s Gold Medal winners before returning to the Foundation for next year’s tournament.
Next year’s Tournament of Champions will again take place in Brigham City and be condensed to three days. The organizers anticipate the addition of a stand-alone championship court with plenty of seating for comfortable viewing of medal matches.
