A Word From the Board
USAPA commends you on staying healthy. The COVID-19 crisis is understandably occupying a significant amount of attention these days, in virtually all aspects of life. Yet, in light of this pandemic, we find the best of human nature shining through. We continue to be in awe, witnessing front line health providers, caregivers, emergency personnel, first responders, store personnel and countless others giving of their time in such a selfless manner, and often times in potentially life-threatening ways. It truly is a blessing to be part of this great country.
The USA Pickleball Association’s position regarding the COVID-19 situation has been very clear, consistent and transparent. We fully and unequivocally support the guidelines being provided by the CDC, other healthcare experts and public officials. While we realize that numerous inconveniences have been encountered by everyone, we urge everyone to continue to err on the side of caution when health and well-being are at risk.
Despite the challenging COVID-19 environment, the USAPA Board and staff are unified and optimistic about the USAPA and the future of pickleball. We are committed and dedicated to the members and the growth of this sport that we all love. Phil Mortenson, who has been a USA Pickleball board member since its inception in 2005, will serve as Board Chair for the remainder of 2020 and Laura Patterson, who has been a board member since 2010 will serve as Vice Chair.
The Executive Director and his staff continue to perform at the highest level in the face of numerous current-day changes and challenges. While pickleball play may have been suspended, the planning and development of programs to roll out for our members continues unabated.
Reflect back at the twinkle in your eyes and bounce in your step when you first picked up a paddle and started playing pickleball. Keep that moment in your memory as you wait to share that magic with other beginners when it’s safe to resume play. Sharing the discovery of pickleball is one of the thrills that continues to grow this sport into a national phenomenon.
We began this message focusing on your health and wellness and we’ll end on that same note! Pickleball has significantly and materially contributed to the health, well-being and quality of life of millions of people; and YOUR support as a USAPA Pickleball member is to be commended. We thank our members, our volunteers and our valued staff for growing this sport into what we believe is not only the fastest growing sport in America but also the most enjoyable sport.
We have seen your creativity during this time of social distancing and while it seems like an eternity, this outbreak will pass and, when it’s safe to do so, we will all return to the courts playing, dinking, hitting great drop shots and socializing. Until then, we wish upon you a continued positive attitude and resilience. Do what you can to make the best of this moment and stay safe!
