Laura Detweiler, director of Newport Beach Parks, Beaches and Recreation, explained that in 2013, a group of residents initiated the idea of bringing the sport to Newport Beach. “As part of our research, we hosted a demo, where 80 people showed up,” she said. “No doubt that there is interest.” Jim Whistler, who coordinates the free clinics, said, everyone should give pickleball a try. “The city recognizes that pickleball offers seniors an excellent way to stay active physically and socially,” he said.
